A couple of months after the unveiling of the new generation Outback and Legacy models, Japanese carmaker Subaru announced production of the two models started this week at its facility in Indiana.
The facility is Subaru’s only one located outside Asia, and it is also in charge of assembling the Ascent and Impreza, all for the American market.

“The new Legacy and Outback will provide customers with greater safety, technology and performance than ever before,”
said in a statement Scott Brand, the facility’s vice president.

“I’m proud of the commitment and teamwork that has made these vehicles a reality. I’m also excited for our customers.”

The Legacy sedan, now in its seventh generation, was shown for the first time in February, at the Chicago Auto Show. The sixth generation of its SUV partner, the Outback, surfaced for the first time in April at the New York International Auto Show.

Of the two, the Outback is the model that appears to have changed the most, as it moves closer to an SUV status and away from the one of glorified station wagon.

Based on the Legacy shown before it, the new Outback comes with the most advanced systems to date, turbocharged engines and several never-before-used features, such as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The new Outback and Legacy mark the return, following a 10-year hiatus, of a turbocharged engine to the range. We’re talking about the 2.4-liter engine that powers the XT models. It develops 260-horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque and has a fuel consumption rated at 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Both the Legacy and Outback are built on the Subaru Global Platform that is stiffer than its predecessor, allowing for improved safety. Also, the new platform facilitates better dynamics and reduced noise and vibration.

When they hit the shelves, the Legacy will sell starting from $22,745 while the Outback from $26,645.
