Gallo scores five times to lead Husky laxers to win

BELLEFONTE — When it comes to scoring goals, there are really too many questions about the Xs and Os for the Mifflin County Huskies.

The Huskies’ offense centers around Mara Gallo.

That was the case on Saturday as Gallo scored five goals as Mifflin County muscled out a 7-6 thriller over the Bellefonte Red Raiders in girls lacrosse action.

Husky goalie Joshlynn Tate also made some key saves as she stopped six shots in the contest.

“I’m very happy with my team”, said Mifflin County head coach Hillary Worley. “Our defense was strong our offense and did the job when we needed it and we got the W. She’s (Tate) definitely showing improvement every day. This is her first year she is officially in goal. She continues to improve every day.”

In the first half, the defenses took center stage as Bellefonte grabbed a slim 4-3 advantage. The Red Raiders scored first on their possession when Alana McNichol hit on an unassisted goal at 11:09.

Mifflin County battled back as Gallo hit a blast at 8:29 to tie the contest. Bellefonte jumped back in front on a fast-break goal by Lila Dawson as she notched an unassisted goal at the 2:59 mark to give the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Gallo went back to work as she tied the score, hitting a tough shot in the middle of the pack with five seconds left in the opening period.

The Red Raiders grabbed the lead again as Taylor Badger stole the ball out and converted that into an unassisted goal at 9:17.

Gallo answered again as she aggressively attacked the goal, tying the game at 3-3 with 6:06 left in the second. A late goal by Aubrey Barnard gave Bellefonte a 4-3 edge at halftime.

Mifflin County opened the scoring in the third quarter to tie the game at 4-4 as Gallo got loose in the crease with a shot at 1:43.

The Huskies added a buzzer-beater by Hannah Sharp to go up 5-4 entering the final stanza.

In the fourth, Mifflin County increased its lead to 6-4 as Gracelynn Beckenbaugh scored off an inbounds pass. After a steal, Barnard broke loose and hit on a breakaway attempt at 6:26 to close the gap to a goal.

Mifflin County answered again to go up by two via another shot by Gallo for a 7-5 lead.

With less than a minute left, Dawson made it a 7-6 game, but Bellefonte could not get the equalizer.

The Huskies outshot Bellefonte, 17-14. Ava Hill turned aside eight shots for Bellefonte.

Mifflin County travels to Chambersburg on Tuesday.
