Turkmenistan is improving the system of inclusive education

The Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), continues to work to improve inclusive education in the country through the training of teachers, administrators and specialists from various sectors of pilot schools and kindergartens in Ashgabat.

One of these events, aimed at improving the skills of participants in implementing inclusive practices and developing individual learning plans for children with disabilities, took place from January 20 to 24. The training allowed teachers and relevant specialists get acquainted with tools for assessing the specific needs of children in the educational process.

The role of interdisciplinary groups - teachers, child care professionals, and parents - in creating comprehensive support systems was emphasized, and the necessary assistive technologies were identified that would increase the level of children's participation in education.

The importance of synchronized early intervention and individualized education plans to support families and ensure universal participation of children with disabilities was also emphasized.

In addition to professional development of specialists in the field of education, international experts, together with a national team of engineers, assessed the physical infrastructure in selected educational institutions in Ashgabat for compliance with accessibility requirements for children and adults with disabilities. Recommendations from the assessment will serve as a basis for improving infrastructure to create a shared inclusive environment for people with disabilities.

UNICEF international expert Filomena Perreira said that this initiative underscores Turkmenistan's continued commitment to inclusive education and that the country is a leader in intersectoral collaboration that builds sustainable inclusive systems.
